It also served as a subpost for the Texas Rangers during the Civil War. In addition to its military purpose, Fort Phantom Hill was a buying point for buffalo hides. For a brief time, the fort was the county seat of Jones County, but was ultimately seized by the Anson tribe on November 14, 1881. Today, Fort Phaeton is privately owned and operated.

The site was once a military post. It was a five-company fort, which was abandoned in 1854.
